Creating your first tutu tulle skirt

Creating your first tutu tulle skirt
Making a tulle skirt or no sew tutu is a great first project to start off with if you are new to creating costumes. These are great gifts for little girls or to wear yourself. You can make them big and fluffy, with or without a lot of color, or create a modest tulle skirt that lays flat and skims your body.

There are several easy ways to create a tutu. One way is a no sew tutu method and the other is with a sewing machine. However, the sewing machine method could also be done with hand stitching.

To start you need supplies? A tutu tulle skirt will need of course tulle! Lots of tulle.

For a child?s tulle skirt, you will need between 2-4 yards. A medium sized skirt will need about 5- 7 yards, and for a large adult skirt you will need between 8- 10 yards. Of course, you can make them extra fluffy tulle skirts with more tulle if you?d like.

You will also need a waistband. This is where we will break down the two different types of tutus that you can easily make.

First the no sew tutu.

While gathering your tulle you will also need a ribbon that is in the same shade as the tulle. The ribbon needs to be the measurement of the waist plus 2 feet for tying a bow. Make sure the ribbon is about 1/2-inch width.

First, you will cut the tulle in 2 ? 4-inch-wide strips and then cut them the length of the desired final skirt length x?s 2. So, each piece will be twice that of the desired length. If your skirt is to be 10 inches long, then cut each strip 20 inches.

For the width, 2-inch strips will give a less fluffy skirt and 4-inch strips will be a much more fluffier skirt.

Next take your strips and fold them in half and place over the ribbon. Take the end of the strips of tulle and feed them through the tops to create a hacking knot.

Be mindful to keep the tulle knots even and smooth while working your way from one end to the other stopping at the length of the waist making sure to leave a foot on either side to tie a bow.
And your done!

A Sewn tutu is just as easy??

Your supplies are the tulle, an elastic for the waist band that is the size of the waist, matching thread that is the same as the tulle, a crochet hook or safety pin, and a sewing machine.

First, instead of cutting strips you will take the bolt of 54? tulle and fold it in half and half again so the width of the tulle now measures 13.5? in length.

At the top of the tulle sew a straight stitch the width of the elastic to create a casing for the waistband. After you make the casing you will then feed the elastic through the casing you just made to create the waistband.

Next, after the elastic is through the length of the waistband sew both ends of the elastic together at ? inch with a straight stitch in the center and zigzag on both ends of the ? inch elastic seam to create the waist.

Lastly, pull the tulle together and sew it shut with straight stitch making sure to go through all 4 layers. Then fluff and decorate with flowers, rhinestones, and ribbons.
