Your knee replacement surgery day is finally here. You will be nervous, anxious and excited at the same time. You are ready to get your life back and get on the road to recovery.

You will have prepared for your surgery. House cleaned, make ahead food is in the freezer, your companion for the next two weeks have been arranged, you have your walker, cane and ice machine waiting at home.

You will not be able to eat the night before your surgery, you will also have been off any blood thinning drugs. Chances are you will be taking a shower with some sort of antibacterial soap and wear clean bedclothes and use clean bedsheets. This maybe one to three days before your surgery. Pack your overnight bag with loose and comfortable clothes. Your surgery leg will be very swollen, tender and sensitive to anything it touches. Be sure to bring your devices for entertainment.

Knee replacement surgery is a MAJOR SURGERY and will be a long hard recovery, long after your physical therapies are over. It takes a full 1 to 2 years to fully recover from this surgery. If you feel the need, there are many videos on youtube of knee replacement surgery. In essence, the surgeon breaks your leg and pounds metal poles into your bones.

On your surgery day, you will be checked into the hospital, pay your insurance deductible, if needed and go to the pre surgery room.

Most knee replacement surgery, includes your surgeon, anesthesiologist, nurse along with other members of your team your surgeon requires. I was able to talk to my anethesiogost, the day before my surgery so they could get any medical surgery history and get to know me.

My surgeon required an epidural and general anesthetic, I received the epidural in the operating room then I was out. I woke up in the recovery room and immediately began my heel slides. Scar tissue forms 30 minutes after surgery and can impede your recovery.

Once in your room, if you are staying in a hospital. Some insurance are making knee replacement outpatient surgery. Mileage may vary. The nurses asked for me to lift up my operated leg up and then checked my vitals.

Before long your physical therapist will show up and you will begin physical therapy. Depending on your recovery it can last up to 12 weeks or longer.
